Economics Department

Introduction and Pioneering Heritage

The Department of Economics at S. B. Garda College (Arts) & P. K. Patel College of Commerce, Navsari, stands as one of the institution's most historic and foundational pillars, established in June 1946. For eight decades, the department has been dedicated to imparting high-quality economic education, promoting deep socio-economic awareness, and nurturing analytical reasoning. It has played an instrumental role in shaping generations of thinkers, policymakers, financial analysts, and socially responsible citizens capable of evaluating complex market structures.

Academic Milestones and Structural Evolution

Demonstrating an early commitment to advanced macroeconomic research and scholastic excellence, the department introduced its Post Graduate (P.G.) programme in Economics in 1957. Following structural reforms in higher education and the subsequent centralization of postgraduate centers in 1970, the department's core P.G. center was transitioned to the University Departments.

Nevertheless, the department sustained its advanced academic footprint; Economics has continued to be taught with exceptional rigor and practical depth at the postgraduate level within the Faculty of Commerce, bridging the gap between theoretical wealth distribution models and corporate financial reality.

Pedagogical Framework & NEP 2020 Integration

Embracing the visionary framework of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the department champions a learner-centric, multidisciplinary, and skill-oriented approach to instruction. The core curriculum delivers a comprehensive foundation in vital economic domains, including:

  • Microeconomics and Macroeconomics

  • Public Finance and Fiscal Policy

  • Banking, Financial Markets, and Institutional Economics

  • International Trade and Global Development Dynamics

The department bridges abstract modeling with experiential learning and empirical discovery. Students are regularly engaged in academic seminars, expert guest lectures, collaborative group discussions, and field-based socio-economic surveys. Faculty members prioritize data interpretation, quantitative literacy, and the application of abstract economic theories to real-world regional and global crises.

Career Horizons

By cultivating an intersection of quantitative precision, research aptitude, and ethical values, the department prepares its graduates for competitive career trajectories. Alumni are uniquely equipped to excel in advanced academic research, banking and financial institutions, corporate consultancy, civil services, public administration, data analytics, and developmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
