Gujarati Department

The Department of Gujarati was established in the year 1946 with the aim of promoting Gujarati language, literature, and culture among students. Since its inception, the department has played a vital role in preserving the rich literary heritage of Gujarat and developing students’ linguistic, literary, and creative abilities. It has consistently contributed to higher education by encouraging the study of Gujarati as both a language and a medium of cultural expression.

At the postgraduate level, the department started its Post Graduate programme in 1956. Initially, Gujarati was offered as the principal subject, while Hindi and Sanskrit were taught as subsidiary subjects. This structure provided students with a broader understanding of Indian languages and comparative literary traditions. The combination helped students develop interdisciplinary knowledge and strengthened their academic foundation in literature and language studies.

However, during the last three years, the subsidiary subjects of Hindi and Sanskrit were removed from the curriculum, and all papers are now offered exclusively in Gujarati. This change has allowed students to focus more deeply on Gujarati literature, criticism, linguistics, folk literature, literary theory, and modern literary trends. It has strengthened specialization in the subject and enhanced the scope for advanced research and academic excellence.

From the academic year 2007–08, an important structural reform was introduced in the postgraduate programme. M.A. Part-I and M.A. Part-II were combined to create a more integrated and systematic approach to postgraduate studies. This helped improve academic continuity and provided students with better planning and progression in their studies.

The department remains committed to nurturing literary sensitivity, cultural awareness, and research aptitude among students. Through seminars, literary activities, essay competitions, and academic discussions, students are encouraged to explore the richness of Gujarati literature and its relevance in contemporary society. With a strong academic tradition and dedication to excellence, the Department of Gujarati continues to be a center of literary learning and cultural development.
