Hindi Department

The Department of Hindi at S. B. Garda College was established in the year 1952 with the objective of promoting Hindi language, literature, and cultural values among students. Since its inception, the department has played an important role in strengthening linguistic competence and literary awareness at the undergraduate level. Initially, Hindi was introduced and taught as a subject at the Undergraduate (U.G.) level, where students were given opportunities to develop proficiency in language, literature, and expression. Recognizing the growing importance of higher education in Hindi, the college received recognition to start a Postgraduate (P.G.) Centre in the year 1955. As a result, Hindi was introduced at the postgraduate level in M.A. Part-I and Part-II. At the P.G. level, Hindi was offered both as a Special subject and as a Subordinate subject, enabling students to pursue advanced studies in Hindi literature, criticism, poetry, prose, linguistics, and cultural studies. This expansion significantly enhanced the academic stature of the department and provided students with opportunities for higher learning and research. However, with the establishment of the centralized Postgraduate Centre by South Gujarat University, the independent P.G. Centre of the college was closed in the year 1998. Although the postgraduate teaching facility was discontinued, the Department of Hindi continued its strong academic presence at the undergraduate level. At present, Hindi is taught at the U.G. level as both a Special subject and a Subordinate subject in the Arts faculty. The department remains committed to developing students’ understanding of Hindi language and literature while also fostering critical thinking, communication skills, and cultural awareness. It is also noteworthy that Hindi was taught in the Commerce faculty, reflecting the department’s wider contribution across disciplines and its role in promoting Hindi as a language of practical and academic importance. The Department of Hindi continues to uphold its rich tradition of academic excellence and remains an integral part of the educational mission of S. B. Garda College.
