Sanskrit Department

The Department of Sanskrit was established in the year 1946 with the objective of promoting the rich heritage of Sanskrit language, literature, and Indian cultural values among students. Since its inception, the department has played a significant role in nurturing linguistic competence, literary understanding, and moral values through the study of classical Sanskrit texts.

At the undergraduate level, Sanskrit is offered as a special subject, providing students with an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of Sanskrit grammar, poetry, drama, prose, philosophy, and ancient Indian wisdom. The department aims to develop students’ analytical abilities, language skills, and appreciation for India’s intellectual traditions. Through regular classroom teaching, seminars, discussions, and literary activities, students are encouraged to explore the relevance of Sanskrit in modern life.

The postgraduate program in Sanskrit was started in 1952, reflecting the growing interest and importance of advanced studies in the subject. However, at present, the college does not have a separate postgraduate department for Sanskrit. Therefore, postgraduate teaching is conducted in collaboration with another college where students are guided for higher studies in Sanskrit. This arrangement ensures that students continue to receive quality education and academic support at the postgraduate level.

The department remains committed to preserving and promoting Sanskrit as a language of knowledge, culture, and values. It also encourages students to participate in academic competitions, essay writing, shloka recitation, and cultural programs related to Sanskrit literature and Indian tradition.

With a legacy of several decades, the Department of Sanskrit continues to contribute meaningfully to higher education by fostering academic excellence and cultural awareness. It strives to inspire students to appreciate the timeless relevance of Sanskrit and its contribution to Indian civilization and global knowledge traditions.
